As most of you know I live in Mississippi, I was born in Mississippi, my family has been in Mississippi territory since somewhere around 1770. I am a Mississippian.
Now by this time everyone knows Al Mackey is from Virginia. he is a bigot, hates anything remotely connected to the Confederacy. I have never heard of Mackey mention visiting Mississippi. This time he is crowing about some Civil Rights layer suing Gov. Phil Bryant. That ought to go over real good. His reasoning is it ““alleging that the Confederate imagery incites racial violence and infringes on the 14th- Amendment protections of black residents.”
You gotta be kidding me!!! If this lawyer should win I just may bring a case against him for bigotry and ignorance.
Now Mackey decides he knows enough about Mississippi to write one of his trashy articles about my state. I am gonna prove he is nothing but a cherry picking liar. Lets look shall we?
At https://studycivilwar.wordpress.com/2016/03/01/mississippi-flag-and-proclamation/ Mackey makes this statement–
!. Mississippi’s state flag, which incorporates confederate flag imagery
Well yes and no.
The official description of the flag doesn’t mention a Confederate Flag it says this–
“…with width two-thirds of its length; with a union square, in width two-thirds of the width of the flag; the ground of the union to be red and a broak blue saltier thereon, bordered with white and emblazoned with thirteen (13) mullets or five-pointed stars, corresponding with the original number of States of the Union; the field to be divided into there bars of equal width, the upper one blue, the center one white, and the lower one, extending the whole length of the flag, red–the national colors; the staff surmounted with a spear-head, and a battle-axe below; the flag to be fringed with gold, and the staff guilded with gold.”
I already see the argument that is going to arise. Someone will say gee George unless I have gone blind that clearly looks like a Confederate Flag to me. I will agree. But and there is always a but isn’t there let’s look at the description of the US flag—
Section 1. The flag of the United States shall have thirteen horizontal stripes, alternate red and white, and a union consisting of white stars on a field of blue.
Sec. 2. The positions of the stars in the union of the flag and in the union jack shall be as indicated on the attachment to this order, which is hereby made a part of this order
Do you see anything on the United States Flag that represents a Union Jack as we know it? I do not. If fact the Mississippi flag come closer to fitting the actual description than the US Flag.
Mackey of course can’t let a good opportunity to let a lie escape his keyboard so he puts up the cornerstone speech as proof positive that white supremacy was thed reason the Confederacy was formed. Mackey never mentions this
The Cornerstone Speech was delivered extemporaneously by Vice President Alexander H. Stephens, and no official printed version exists. The text below was taken from a newspaper article in the Savannah Republican, as reprinted in Henry Cleveland, Alexander H. Stephens, in Public and Private: With Letters and Speeches, before, during, and since the War, Philadelphia, 1886, pp. 717-729.
[REPORTER’S NOTE. — Your reporter begs to state that the above is not a perfect report, but only such a sketch of the address of Mr. Stephens as embraces, in his judgment, the most important points presented by the orator. — G.]
But hey,why let s a couple of real facts get in the wy of a biased blog post???
Mackey’s next cherry picked fact comes from Mississippi’s Declaration of Immediate Causes which start off —
‘Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery — the greatest material interest of the world.’
Mackey goes on to add this– These are not the words of some liberal revisionist trying to make Mississippi and the Confederacy out to be historical villains. Sure it is Mackey, you have just as easily picked this passage from the same doc– It seeks not to elevate or to support the slave, but to destroy his present condition without providing a better.
And Mackey, can’t it also be said that the history of your blog post prove you are lying? I think so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
