According to Al Mackey the reason Florida, as well as all Southern states, left the union was slavery and white supremacy.
“The predominant claims they have here all deal with slavery and white supremacy.”
Without spending a lot of time making an argument to refute Mackey’s biased claims I will just post a couple of historical facts.
If any state left the Union solely because of slavery or white supremacy or the color of Lincoln’s eyes, it was their right. There was no law in 1860 in the constitution, the preventing secession. Chief Justice S.P. Chase supports this statement . See my post on Southern Heritage Advancement Preservation and Education (SHAPE) at http://southernheritageadvancementpreservationeducation.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?2009180.post
Now that being said what about the issue of slavery? If secession had been all about slavery the seceding states could have simply went back to the Union and war MAY been avoided. The United states had passed an amendment known as the Corwin amendment, the original 13th amendment or Ghost amendment. This amendment stated — No Amendment shall be made to the Constitution which will authorize or give to Congress the power to abolish or interfere, within any state, with the domestic institutions thereof, including that of persons held to labor or service by the laws of said State.” —

Now on the issue of white supremacy. I am sure examples can be found in any state. I am not going to chase rabbits and go all over the web trying to find examples. I’ll just go straight to the horse’s mouth, good ole Lincoln. —-
Mr. Lincoln’s Reply in the Alton Joint Debate.
Now, irrespective of the moral aspect of this question as to whether there is a right or wrong in enslaving a negro, I am still in favor of our new Territories being in such a condition that white men may find a home—may find some spot where they can better their condition—where they can settle upon new soil, and better their condition in life_ I am in favor of this not merely (I must say it here as I have elsewhere) for our own people who are born amongst us, but as an outlet for free white people everywhere, the world over—in which Hans, and Baptiste, and Patrick, and all other men from all the world, may find new homes and better their condition in life. No mention off negroes free or slave
And– “The whole nation is interested that the best use shall be made of these territories. We want them for the homes of free white people. This they cannot be, to any considerable extent, if slavery shall be planted within them. Slave States are places for poor white people to remove FROM; not to remove TO. New free States are the places for poor people to go to and better their condition. For this use, the nation needs these territories.”
Now all I can say about Mackey’s actions in throwing the white supremacy line out is this– either he is ashamed of being white or he knows that history does not support his statements and he must rely on emotions to help prop up his case.
